Like I said, I don't have the skill right now, and I'd rather not put the time into multiple tries to get something that looks good. I'm not denying that it's possible, I just personally don't have the patience or a teacher to help me learn it.

JOIN THE SCA THEN. The entire purpose of the SCA is to teach people. There is more than likely 3-10 people in your Local SCA group that can help you. There is no reason you cant do both SCA and LARP. We have several people in our group that does both.

Chainmail's more repetitive, but I could do other things while working on it. Plate would piss me off more, I think, because the patience would come in with making mistakes.

Oh, new page. Dred, I appreciate the effort, I really do, but right now I'm not willing to put in the time investment to learn armor-making. That's why I was looking to buy some.

If you want to deal with patience, try making chainmail. That is enough to drive you insane all over the place.
AmadeusMaxwell on TZH is still working with maille, I admire the craft but damn, I wouldn't have the patience.

Worst part. Cutting the friggin rings. You can use a metal saw with plate. You can't with chainmail. Plate isn't as hard as you might think. Then the other issue with chainmail is when you make the expanders, they are a pain in the ass to put in and make them work. Without expanders, when you move your arms, it would tear apart your chainmail. I have a complete HATRED for making chainmail. You want a chainmail keychain or dice bag? I'll gladly do it. Want a shirt or glove? Screw you, find someone else.

I use the Metal Dowel (custom made) and a drill to make the spool. then i use heavy duty wire cutters to cut them. I have tried useing a saw or dremel blade but they never worked. Also, i was using aluminum, steel is too expensive for me.

For reference, Dred, this is what homemade armor looks like out here. I think you see the problem.

Look at the designs of modern armor... Football, soccer, lacrosse and hockey pads. That should give you an idea of how layering plates can yield great results, and look awesome.
